Why Mac users pick this Telegram build

Telegram maintains a separate macOS client, hand-tuned in Swift, that respects every macOS convention — traffic lights, sidebar behaviour, Retina text rendering, animated stickers powered by CAMetalLayer. It is arguably the smoothest Telegram client of the lot.

macOS requirements

  • macOS: macOS 10.13 High Sierra or newer, tested through macOS Sonoma
  • Architecture: Universal binary — Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) and Intel x86_64
  • Disk space: ≈ 320 MB app bundle, plus cache in ~/Library/Group Containers
  • RAM: 2 GB minimum, 8 GB recommended for large groups and video calls
  • Distribution: Delivered through Apple’s macOS Telegram website / Mac App Store

How to install Telegram on macOS

  1. Open the macOS download page. Tap Download for macOS. This portal opens macos.telegram.org in a new tab where Telegram’s macOS team ships the official Mac App Store link.
  2. Get it from the Mac App Store. Click the App Store badge, sign in with your Apple ID and press Get. The download is signed by Apple and re-verified with every launch.
  3. Launch and grant permissions. First launch will ask for notification and contacts permissions. Notifications are highly recommended so Telegram can wake up in the background.
  4. Sign in with your phone. Enter your country and phone number. Existing accounts will receive a confirmation code inside their mobile Telegram or via SMS.
  5. Pin Telegram to the Dock. Right-click the Dock icon and choose Options → Keep in Dock so the app is one click away on every login.

Feature highlights on macOS

Apple Silicon native

The universal binary runs natively on M1, M2 and M3 chips for lower memory usage and near-instant scrolling in busy channels.

Menu bar quick send

Optional menu-bar helper lets you send Saved Messages or share a URL to Telegram without switching apps.

Handoff & Continuity

Pick up a Telegram Web session on macOS via Continuity, and drop files from Finder straight into any chat.

iCloud-free sync

Chats sync through Telegram’s own cloud, not iCloud — you keep your account in sync even without an Apple ID linked to iCloud.

Update cadence and safety

  • Only install from the Mac App Store or the button on this page — third-party dmg mirrors are commonly repackaged with adware.
  • Use System Settings → Notifications to allow Telegram notifications with previews suppressed on the lock screen.
  • Turn on Two-Step Verification in Settings → Privacy for extra protection against SIM-swap attacks.
  • Removing Telegram via Launchpad clears the app bundle; run a Group Container cleanup for a fully reset install.

macOS build vs. Telegram Desktop

The macOS build is separate from the Qt-based Telegram Desktop used on Windows. Both share the same protocol and cloud, but macOS gets exclusive UI features such as a native sidebar with folder tabs and a compact inline-media viewer. Pair it with the iOS app for iPhone and Apple Watch, or the Web edition for zero-install access from any Mac.

macOS FAQ

Does Telegram support Apple Watch? Yes — install Telegram on your iPhone and the companion Watch app becomes available immediately.

Can I run Telegram in a browser on macOS instead? Absolutely — open Telegram Web in Safari or Chrome.

What about Linux users on Apple hardware? Use the Telegram Desktop build referenced from the Windows page — it provides an Apple Silicon Linux binary.
